SOTW0124 City and Colour "Friends"
In case you don't speak Spanish and cannot understand a few of my past blog posts, I've been selecting a song to represent the week we just lived. These posts include CDLS in the title, meaning "Canción De La Semana", which translates to "Song Of The Week", followed by the number of fiscal week we just went through and the year we're in. You know, these have the song that represents the whole vibe of the 7 days that just passed; maybe a tune that was released or that I discovered that week. It's always a gamble because, honestly, it could be any type of song and not just one from my usual picks or playlists. It's also supposed to be a log of the music I enjoy throughout the year and I also throw a brief explainer or reflection on why it hit me. Hopefully Future Oscar can get something out of logging that information.
Either way, I'm starting 2024 with a banger. From City and Colour, the song is called "Friends" (Live version, from the album "Guide Me Back Home"). Why? Because it's magical. The tune, the voice, the lyrics. I love it all. I even tried to learn it on the guitar. That should tell you how much I like it.
Now, City and Colour is the name for the solo act of Dallas Green, who you may know as clean vocalist from the hardcore band Alexisonfire, where he plays folk/soft rock themes sometimes by himself, sometimes with a full backing band. I chose the live version because I think it has an intimate vibe that can't be felt in the record – even the speech at the beginning has something that I really like.
This one goes to all of you, my friends. To Rulo, Pablo, Edgar, Tony, Jerry, Senzy, Pichoneitor and the rest... We're growing up! But it's always nice to see you have become such fine gentleman.
Lyrics (via Genius)
Here I am again
Trading in a group of friends
To hopefully make amends
With everything I've done wrong
A last ditch effort
To find something better
And leave well enough alone
I will wait for all the words of happiness
I will wait for all the words of jubilation
I will hope for just an ounce of confidence
To offer myself some sort of congratulations
There is a light I'm trying to find
Between the water and the open sky
I know that's where the wild winds blow
Through times of trouble
Or just a simple stumble
I can go and make some real good noise
Still I wait for all the words of happiness
Still I wait for all the words of jubilation
I will hope for just an ounce of confidence
To offer myself some sort of congratulations
I wanna live where the wild winds blow
I know
I wanna live where the wild winds blow
I know
I hope you like it and it provides you with a warm feeling in your tummy, so you can start 2024 from scratch. I think we all could appreciate starting this year with a blank slate.
That's it! Let me know what song you chose for your first week of 2024 at @scaarg on X (ex-Twitter) as well as on Threads.
Have a good one.
