SOTW012026 Hayley Williams "Parachute"

Starting the year with a strong rec. Hayley Williams baby.

Now, you may not know this–because I think I've never said it in here–but I fucking loooove Hayley Williams. Not surprising, I would say, if have looked at her or heard her sing or heard her speak. She's like... well rounded, to say the least.

Well, during 2025 she decided to give me a belated happy birthday present and dropped a bomb album called "Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party". Super personal, intimate and really well done. The song's lyrics are hard to listen to if you follow her beyond her music and know a little bit of background. Of course, you can look it all up–and you should, if you want to deepen your feelings for the album–and I'm pretty sure there's even dissections of it available somewhere online. Looking at you, Reddit. But, yeah, even her website–screenshot below–was made to look nostalgic, for those a little bit older and in the know. I feel that it all, the album and the website, are saying "if you know, you know", like, "we're in together now".

Hailey, if you ever read this, nice color choice.

Anyway, one of those songs is called "Parachute" and the first time I listened it I got one of those spidey-sense pulses in my body telling me it was important and I needed to give it attention. Turns out it's fucking great and, while not so subtle, it's packing a punch in the lyrics department. The song is one of the more upbeat songs in the album starting with this weird chaotic noise that serves as entrance to a really soft piano to show there's something delicate about what she's saying, only to then move to guitars with distortion a punchy bass and strong drums.

Without further ado, you can find the song and lyrics below:

Lyrics (via Genius)

[Verse 1]
Yes, I saw her, her spiraled hair
And I could see it, our life in a movie
And now I'm spinning, my web up in the air
My spider senses, rain's gonna fall
Wash away the life I'm weaving

[Chorus]
I thought you were gonna catch me
I never stopped falling for you
Now I know better, never let me
Leave home without a parachute
I thought you were gonna catch me
I never stopped falling for you
Now I know better, never let me
Leave home without a parachute

[Verse 2]
You told me you waited for me, you said that you won
Asked me on a plane from Rio, do I ever think of us?
And you were at my wedding, I was broken, you were drunk
You could've told me not to do it, I would've run, I would've run
Tell me, what was the moment you decided to give up?
You could've told me what you wanted, I would've done, I would've done
Anything, I would've done anything

[Chorus]
I thought you were gonna catch me
I never stopped falling for you
Now I know better, never let me
Leave home without a parachute
I thought you were gonna catch me (Watch me fall)
I never stopped falling for you (Watch me fall)
Now I know better, never let me (Watch me fall)
Leave home without a parachute

[Bridge]
Watch me fall
Watch me fall
Watch me fall through the sky
Watch me fly

[Chorus]
I thought you were gonna catch me (Watch me fall)
I never stopped falling for you (Now watch me fly)
Now I know better, never let me (Watch me fall)
Leave home without a parachute
I thought you were gonna catch me (Watch me fall)
I never stopped falling for you (Now watch me fly)
Now I know better, never let me (Watch me fall)
Leave home without a parachute

[Outro]
Watch me fly

I hope you liked it. I think the following songs from the album, Good Ol' Days and Showbiz, have more vibes and serve better as closing act, but there's something undeniably strong about Parachute that makes me like it way more. Well, it's not just some thing... Obviously, it's the lyrics.

That's it for today. Have a great one. Now watch me fly.
