SOTW2224 Lizzy McAlpine "Ceilings (acoustic)"
It feels like the end of a movie I’ve seen before before
I have this thing I play with myself called "BB Wednesdays", where I play music you'll probably hear when you're shopping in retail stores or at that famous coffee shop chain with the siren logo. You know, basic bitch songs. Every now and then, one of the songs sticks and makes it into my playlist, 'cause even though they're basic, some of them are pretty darn good.
The most recent one to make the list is "Ceilings" by Lizzy McAlpine. I don't really recall how I got to it –I think it was maybe her tiny desk concert video– but I can clearly remember hearing the lyrics "You're kinda cute..." over the fantastic D chord –x5403x– that I love so much. I was instantly hooked. I picked up my guitar and learned the song by ear in the next 5 mins, looking at her video only when that weird Em chord came up.
Anyway, the song is really beautiful and well made. Please give it a listen.
Lyrics (via Genius)
Ceilings, plaster
Can't you just make it move faster?
Lovely to be sitting here with you
You're kinda cute but it's raining harder
My shoes are now full of water
Lovely to be rained on with you
It's kinda cute but it's so short
[Chorus]
Then you're driving me home
And I don't wanna leave
But I have to go
You kiss me in your car
And it feels like the start of a movie I've seen before
Before
[Verse 2]
Bed sheets, no clothes
Touch me like nobody else does
Lovely to just lay here with you
You're kinda cute and I would say all of this
But I don't wanna ruin the moment
Lovely to sit between comfort and chaos
[Chorus]
But it's over
Then you're driving me home
And it kinda comes out as I get up to go
You kiss me in your car
And it feels like the start of a movie I've seen before
[Outro]
But it's not real
And you don't exist
And I can't recall the last time I was kissed
It hits me in the car
And it feels like the end of a movie I've seen before
Before
Before we go, and if you have time to spare, please check Alex Melton's emo reinterpretation of the song. I think it's pretty great if you are a hardcore rock type of person and felt Lizzy's version was too calm for your taste.
Until the next one!
